When the sun is out we are out
I always get surprised how much sunshine - and the lack of it- affects my mood and energy levels. Even though I have been living in Finland for almost 10 years, going from 6 hours of daylight to 14 hours in a couple of months always gets me off guard. I find myself filled with energy and inspiration and planning family adventures to the nature. Thankfully, my kids are always up for adventure and nowadays also tolerate me chasing them with my camera in hope for some sweet pictures of these precious memories together.
I have a few favourite places in Tampere to visit. My criteria is: children are entertained and free to roam, nice and beautiful/interesting environment as a backdrop of my photos. It is a win-win.
It might be the most mainstream choice, but it is that for a reason.
Beautiful flowers all through spring and summer (April-July).
Big space for the kids to run around.
Summer cafe where you can buy ice-cream.
Pro tip: bring a blanket for a picnic.
This place might not be so known, and it also might seem a bit odd with its urban vibes, but if you are looking for an interesting backdrop for your pictures with lots of texture and colour, this might be for you. It is a safe and surprisingly not so busy environment. There is also family and art related events in the kartano time-to-time. It is worth a visit. You might be surprised how much your little ones enjoy the urban art as well.
Pro tip: take some soap bubbles with for guaranteed entertainment.
3 - Pyynikki hills
No matter the season it is a good idea to head for Pyynikki. The views, the donuts and fresh air. And so close to the city.
However, there is one exceptionally magical time to visit: spring! Specifically end of May. Even just the walk up to the tower: the air is filled with this beautiful flower scent. That is the scent of the lily of the valley. Close to the tower, in the hill side, you can pick a big bouquet of it to take home and then head for a donut to the cafe at the tower. It is my personal favourite flower, and it makes Finnish forests fairytale like.
